She crawled into my lap and I gave her my journal and a highlighter.
She was so happy.
Six-year-old Fridah lives in Mongu, Zambia and loves to count, eat sweets and draw.
Isn’t she adorable?!
She began drawing her masterpieces right away and, let me tell you, they were elaborate.
But I had no idea what they were.
I sat there watching her deliberately adding a line here and a line there, some splotches of color there and some polka dots here. While she carefully continued constructing her art, I wracked my brain trying to make sense of what she was drawing.
She obviously had a specific design in mind but I could not for the life of me figure it out.
“What are you drawing?” I whispered.
“Just wait and you’ll see,” she whispered back.
Sure enough, as she finished up I saw the animals and a little house (or was it a barn?) and the clouds.
Part of her uncompleted work. I couldn’t make sense of any of her art… until it was finished.
It was at that moment I realized this is how I treat the Lord.
His activity is there and He’s crafting every moment, situation and circumstance to His exact specifications in a way that will exalt Himself and bring His children the greatest joy, and all I do is crane my neck and wrack my brain to make sense of what He’s doing.
“What are You doing?” I whisper (or sometimes yell) to God.
“Just wait and you’ll see,” He says.
If we can believe that 6-year-old Fridah has a plan for her art, why do we doubt that the omnipotent, holy God of the universe has a plan for His workmanship?
Oh, that’s right, we believe He has a plan (insert coffee mug printed with Jeremiah 29:11 on the side), we just don’t trust Him to carry it out in a way that will make us happy.
We doubt His love for us. We doubt that He really has our best interest at heart. We doubt that He is truly sovereign over this situation.
We love our control.
Fridah taught me once again that if I just wait on the Master Designer, His plans and intentions will eventually come into focus… or maybe they won’t. Maybe I won’t ever understand. And that’s OK.
He doesn’t owe me an explanation of what He’s doing and I don’t have to rush Him.
As one of my best friends reminded me this week, He is God and not only is He right, He is good.
