Follow me as I follow Jesus

Monday Morning Munch No. 72 – Miracles and Misery

experience-sadnessI’m reading through the Robert Murray M’Cheyne’s reading plan this year and for the 13 days I’ve been at it, it has been fantastic.

The reading takes us through four books of the Bible at one time and a few days ago I spent some serious time laughing over some of Noah’s descendants’ names in Genesis 10 (examples: The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Mash [v. 23]. To Eber was born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg [v. 25], lol), but there have been some slightly (sarcasm) more profound things shown to me.

Matthew 11:20 for example:

“Then [Jesus] began to denounce the cities where most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.”

Lesson: Mighty works of God do not equal repentant and Christ-exalting hearts.

So what is more important? Seeing miracles and the mighty works of God or grieving and repenting of our sin?

I think Jesus’ denouncing (which means to publicly declare to be wrong or evil) of and misery over those most-miraclized cities answers it for us.

Lord, give us not more of the miraculous but more of Your Beloved son in whom You are well pleased and through whom we have redemption. Give us a repentant Spirit, Father. Let us not see the works of Your hands and be hardened or apathetic but consume us with an undying passion for Your name to be justly honored in both the world and our hearts.
